UK-based company Cubico Sustainable Investments aims to expand its clean energy portfolio in 2025 and beyond by deploying a strong project pipeline across its core international markets.

Matt Boss, Head of Development at Cubico, spoke to Clean Energy Pipeline in an interview where he outlined a number of the company’s ongoing development plans.

“My role is to build Cubico’s overall development capabilities and achieve our strategic goals through our experienced country development teams,” said Boss.

“A strong local presence is always critical for development and our global technical, procurement, legal and commercial teams support the pipeline all the way.”

Cubico is currently actively developing projects in several global renewable energy markets, including the UK, Italy, Spain, Australia, Mexico, and the US.

With a development pipeline surpassing 8 GW at the end of 2024, Cubico is targeting significant capacity growth in the solar PV, onshore wind, and battery energy storage (BESS) sectors.

By leveraging expertise across its core global markets, Cubico aims to ensure that new project developments align with strong market fundamentals, supportive regulatory frameworks, and growing energy demand.

“On the development side, we are focused on creating a pipeline of future investments for Cubico,” noted Boss.

“As an IPP our model is develop-to-operate, focused on long term value creation.”

Boss continued: “We see significant opportunities across all our core markets.

“In Australia we are already building wind farms developed in-house. In Italy, our portfolio will be ready to participate in the upcoming FER-X and MACSE auctions, while elsewhere we are advancing onshore wind, utility-scale solar and storage projects.”

Renewable development highlights

Cubico is actively progressing several major projects, including a 500 MW solar PV project in the US, which has already received its main permits and has executed its Large Generator Interconnection Agreement (LGIA).

In the UK, Cubico has announced its 100MW Scout Moor 2 wind farm and the 130 MW Frodsham PV project is moving forward, while in Mexico, Cubico is progressing a pipeline to fit with the country’s National Energy Strategy.

It also has PV and BESS developments in Spain, where it sees potential for demand growth given the planned expansion in datacentre build-outs in the coming years.

Cubico is also constructing the initial phases of its Wambo energy hub in Australia, with plans to integrate wind, solar, and storage technologies as part of a 3.5GW portfolio across the eastern states.

Battery energy storage is another crucial part of Cubico’s long-term strategy.

As renewable penetration increases, energy storage solutions will play a vital role in grid stability and flexibility. The company is integrating BESS across its portfolio to enhance project viability and ensure long-term sustainability.

“Energy storage is a key asset for us as we develop projects that not only generate clean power but also provide essential flexibility and grid support,” noted Boss.

“We expect energy storage to form an increasing proportion of our pipeline in the coming years.”

Assessing market conditions and investment strategies

Despite fluctuating project costs influenced by supply chain dynamics and regulatory changes, Cubico maintains a resilient approach. The company structures its projects to withstand short-term cost variations and remains optimistic about financing conditions.

“Investor appetite for renewables remains strong, and well-structured projects with secure revenue streams continue to attract institutional interest,” explained Boss.

“We focus on long-term viability more than short-term pricing movements.”

Portfolio expansion

Cubico’s long-term vision is to expand its operational portfolio while maintaining a balanced mix of renewable technologies.

Cubico aims to double its development pipeline over the next couple of years, ensuring a steady flow of projects ready for construction and operation.

“With a strong pipeline in place, we are well positioned to solidify our role in the energy transition and contribute meaningfully to the global push for cleaner energy,” remarked Boss.
